Sergeant Joe Noel has finished his time in the dreadful jungles of El Salvador, and after losing his best friend in San Antonio to suicide, he's looking forward to an easy final eight months at Langley. Joe reunites with his longtime friend Gust Anderson and meets the love of his life, Airmen Molly Van De Berg; and his life seems to be turning for the better. But Gust is on his way home, and Colonel Dunlap has sent Molly away on temporary duty, as he engineers a plan to use Joe for one last mission.

Testimonials

At first, I wasn’t sure if I, a middle aged woman from the midwest, would be able to identify with a boy in a small coal-mining town. I was happily surprised that Dilts was able to paint the imagery and emotion that made me feel like I was that lonely loner boy being dragged around and displaced by his nomad family.

By the end of the book, I watched as that young loner adolescent evolved into a man capable of making deep bonds.

I imagined Joe growing up and maintaining old and forming new connections that would continue to define and mold him as a man, husband, friend, father, and grandfather. I like that man that I imagined Joe became. He feels like he could be my friend.

Thank you Doug Dilts for such enjoyable and emersive story telling.
